how often are meteor showers

Meteor showers happen regularly throughout the year, not just once in a while.

General frequency

There are about a dozen major, reliable meteor showers every year, such as the Perseids in August and the Geminids in December. In addition, there are many smaller showers and low‑rate streams, so some type of shower activity is occurring during a large fraction of the year.

During a year

Most months have at least one recognized meteor shower, and some months have several overlapping showers. Calendars from organizations like NASA and major observatories list active showers on roughly 9–12 distinct date ranges each year, each lasting from a few days up to several weeks.

Night‑to‑night and “storms”

On any clear, dark night you can see a few random “sporadic” meteors even when no shower is active. Very intense “meteor storms” with thousands of meteors per hour are rare and may occur only a few times per century for a given shower, such as the Leonids roughly every 33 years.
