The frequency of getting a Pap smear depends on age and health history, following these general guidelines updated in 2025:
- Under 21 years: Pap smears are not recommended as cervical cancer risk is very low.
- Ages 21 to 29: A Pap smear every 3 years is recommended.
- Ages 30 to 65: Either a Pap smear every 3 years or a combined Pap smear and HPV test (co-test) every 5 years.
- Over 65: Pap smears may no longer be necessary if there have been consistently normal results and no history of cervical abnormalities.
More frequent screening may be advised for those with risk factors such as a history of abnormal results, high-risk HPV, weakened immune system, or cervical precancer/cancer history. After age 65, continued screening depends on previous results and risk factors.
