To cut a simple paper snowflake, start with a square piece of paper and a pair of scissors.
Make the paper square
- Take a regular rectangle sheet and fold one corner diagonally so the top edge lines up with the side, making a triangle with a strip left over.
- Cut off the extra strip so you’re left with a perfect square that opens up.
Fold the snowflake base
- Fold the square in half diagonally to make a big triangle, then fold that triangle in half again to make a smaller triangle.
- Imagine the triangle divided into thirds; fold one “third” toward the middle, then fold the other side over it, adjusting so the edges line up neatly.
Trim to a wedge
- With all folds held together, cut straight across the top so all layers are even, forming a neat wedge shape.
- Make sure there are no thin, dangling points that might tear when you unfold.
Cut the pattern
- Use your scissors to cut small triangles, curves, or other shapes out of the sides and tip of the wedge, but do not cut all the way from one side to the other or it will fall apart.
- The more little cuts you make (leaving narrow “bridges” of paper), the lacier your snowflake will look.
Unfold and flatten
- Carefully unfold all the layers to reveal the snowflake and smooth it flat with your hands.
- If you want it very flat, place it between sheets of paper and press under a book for a while.
