To hard restart an iPhone, the exact method depends on the model:
- For iPhone 8 and later (including iPhone X, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16):
- Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
- Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Side/Power button until the Apple logo appears, then release it.
- For iPhone 7 and 7 Plus:
- Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Sleep/Wake (Side) button simultaneously.
- Hold both buttons until the Apple logo appears, then release.
- For iPhone 6s and earlier (including the first generation SE):
- Press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake (top or side) button simultaneously.
- Hold both buttons until the Apple logo appears, then release.
This process forces the iPhone to reboot without deleting any data or bypassing the lock screen. After restart, the usual passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID will be required to unlock the device.
