how to test smoke alarm

Testing a smoke alarm is simple and should be done about once a month. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific model as well.

Basic button test

  • Tell everyone in the home you’re about to test the alarm so they are not startled, and disable or notify any connected monitoring service if applicable.
  • Stand on a stable step stool or ladder, press and hold the test button on the alarm until the siren sounds loudly, then release it; if the sound is weak or doesn’t start, replace the battery and test again or replace the unit.

Power and location checks

  • For mains-powered alarms, check that the power indicator (often a steady green light) is on; if not, the unit or its circuit may need attention from an electrician.
  • Make sure alarms are installed on every level of the home, inside bedrooms, and in hallways outside sleeping areas, following the manufacturer’s placement guidelines.

Testing with “smoke”

  • If you want to test the sensor, use a purpose-made aerosol “smoke detector tester” sprayed briefly toward the alarm, watching that it triggers within a few seconds.
  • Some guides also describe holding a couple of lit matches below the alarm, but safety organizations and technicians often recommend avoiding real smoke and instead using canned test smoke to prevent residue buildup and reduce fire risk.

How often to test and replace

  • Test each alarm monthly, and clean the vents gently with a vacuum or soft cloth to remove dust without using chemical cleaners.
  • Replace batteries at least once or twice a year (or as indicated by low-battery chirps), and replace the entire smoke alarm roughly every 10 years or sooner if it fails any test.
