To treat a bee sting effectively, the following steps are recommended:
- Remove the stinger quickly by scraping it out with a fingernail or a card to prevent more venom from entering the skin.
- Wash the affected area with soap and water to clean the wound and help prevent infection.
- Apply a cold pack or ice wrapped in a cloth to the sting site to reduce swelling and pain, for about 10 to 20 minutes.
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain relief.
- Use antihistamines orally or apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce itching and swelling.
- Avoid scratching the sting area to prevent infection.
If symptoms worsen or there are signs of an allergic reaction (such as swelling spreading to other body parts, difficulty breathing, nausea, hives, or dizziness), seek immediate medical attention.
