Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic drug used to treat bacterial skin infections such as impetigo, secondarily infected traumatic skin lesions, and other primary or secondary superficial skin infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It is available in cream and ointment forms, with a strength of 2% or 20 milligrams per gram (mg/g) of cream or ointment.

Ingredients or materials:

  • Mupirocin ointment USP, 2% contains 20 mg mupirocin in a bland water miscible ointment base (polyethylene glycol ointment, N.F.) consisting of polyethylene glycol 400 and polyethylene glycol 3350.

  • Mupirocin cream USP, 2% contains the dihydrate crystalline calcium hemi-salt of the RNA synthetase inhibitor antibacterial, mupirocin. The inactive ingredients are benzyl alcohol, glycerol monostearate, mineral oil, phenoxyethanol, polyoxyl 20 cetostearyl ether, purified water, and xanthan gum.

  • The inactive ingredients in Bactroban cream (mupirocin calcium cream, 2%) are benzyl alcohol, cetomacrogol 1000, cetyl alcohol, mineral oil, phenoxyethanol, purified water, stearyl alcohol, and xanthan gum.

  • Mupirocin is the active ingredient in all forms of the drug.
