Nail and string art is a DIY technique where nails are hammered onto a board to form the outline of a figure, which is then completed by weaving thread, wire, or string around the nails. The figures created can be geometric patterns or figurative designs, and they can be positive (leaving the board visible around the design) or negative (weaving fiber outside the figure) . The materials needed for nail and string art include:

  • Wood: A board is needed as the base for the nails and string. Solid, plywood, or particle board can be used, but it should offer a hard surface on which to secure the nails in place.

  • Nails: The best nails for string art depend on the desired effect. Black nails with smaller heads can be used when the thread or other items need to stand out, while brass nails with a wide head can be used to make it easy for the string to be held onto each nail.

  • Hammer: A hammer is needed to hammer the nails into the board.

  • Thread, wire, or string: Thread, wire, or string is used to weave around the nails to complete the design.

  • Painters tape/washi tape: Painters tape or washi tape can be used to create a design on the board before hammering in the nails.

  • Scissors: Scissors are needed to cut the thread, wire, or string.

  • Sandpaper: Sandpaper can be used to smooth out the board before starting the project.

  • Stain: Stain can be used to color the board before starting the project.

  • Ruler/measuring tape: A ruler or measuring tape can be used to mark where the nails should be hammered in.

  • Tweezers: Tweezers can be used to help tie knots in the thread.

It is important to pay attention to the material of the board used, as some finishes, such as melamine, can crack easily when a nail is hammered in and leave jagged edges around the hole. Additionally, it is recommended to use wood that is thick enough to allow about 1.25 cm (1/2") of the nails to be hammered into it without their coming out on the other side.
