Osteocytes are located within small chambers called lacunae in the calcified matrix of bone. These lacunae surround the osteocytes and are connected to each other and to the central blood vessels by tiny channels called canaliculi, through which the osteocytes extend their cytoplasmic processes for communication and nutrient/waste exchange.
