Bath salts are a group of recreational designer drugs that are central nervous system stimulants and are designed to mimic effects similar to those produced by cocaine, methamphetamine, and MDMA (ecstasy) . They are not a hygiene product used for bathing, as the name might imply, but are dangerous synthetic ("man-made") cathinones. Bath salts are sold in small plastic or foil packages of 200 to 500 milligrams, and they are often labeled "not for human consumption". Bath salts have been implicated in many psychotic, violent, and life-threatening cases over the last few years, but with limited knowledge as to the exact composition of these drugs, the extent of the danger is also not known.
Positive effects of bath salts are inconsistent, and people still use them in pursuit of certain short-term "highs," such as enhanced empathy, social skills, euphoria, increased alertness and energy, increased sex drive, intensified sensory experiences, and reduced appetite. However, the negative effects of bath salts are severe and can lead to serious, and even fatal adverse reactions. Bath salts have been reported to have a powerful addictive potential, as well as the ability to induce tolerance (more of the drug is required over time to get an equivalent "high") . Reports note intense cravings similar to what methamphetamine users experience. Withdrawal symptoms can include depression, insomnia, nightmares, paranoia, psychosis, self-harm, severe agitation, and more.
