RU58841 is an investigational drug created for treatment against androgenic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness. It is a topical solution that needs to be applied directly to the scalp to bind with the hair follicles. RU58841 competitively binds to the receptors of DHT, blocking DHT from attaching itself to the receptors. It does not reduce the production of DHT, so the systemic side effects that occur due to lowered production of DHT are not seen, for example, sexual side effects. All studies on this compound showed that it works very effectively and without any negative side effects. However, since RU58841 has not passed beyond phase two of drug development, there are no studies that have highlighted the side effects of this medication specifically. No studies in the literature have been scoped to identify any risks and side-effects of this product. However, the side-effects can be extrapolated based on its classification as a non-steroidal anti-androgenic compound. Simply speaking, RU doesnt decrease DHT levels. However, it hinders the function of DHT. Thus, it may cause similar sexual side effects caused by the deficiency of DHT. It is worth noting that someone who gets side effects from finasteride or dutasteride may not necessarily get side effects from RU, and the opposite is true.
