The highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest, is named after Sir George Everest, who was a British surveyor and served as Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843. The mountain was named in his honor by the Royal Geographical Society in 1865, based on the recommendation of Andrew Scott Waugh, Everest's successor as Surveyor General of India. Although George Everest himself objected to the naming, believing local names should be used, the name Mount Everest became official as a compromise due to the difficulty of choosing a common local name for the peak.
