The patent for toilet paper roll was invented by Seth Wheeler in 1891. The roll of connected sheets of paper for toilet use has incisions at intervals extending from the side of the web toward the center, but not meeting, and terminating in an angular cut, where the slight connection left may be separated without injury to the connected sheets. Wheelers improved patent for toilet paper described the idea of perforated toilet paper on a roll, where the sheets are partially separated, having their points of attachment arranged in a novel manner, whereby each sheet will easily separate from the series as it is drawn from the roll, there being no litter occasioned, and any waste of paper is thereby prevented. The patent did not verbally describe the intended direction of the roll in the language of the patent, but the images of the patent fill in the blanks, showing the roll facing out.

There is no information available on the ingredients or materials used in the original patent for toilet paper roll.
