Triamcinolone acetonide is a synthetic glucocorticoid that is used to treat a variety of skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, allergies, and rash. It reduces swelling, itching, and irritation. However, it can also cause side effects, including:
Positive effects:
- Relief of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses
- Adjustment of the immune system when it overreacts
Negative effects:
- Skin redness, burning, itching, irritation, excessive dryness, peeling, thinning of the skin, and blistering
- Allergic reactions or other problems due to inactive ingredients
- Increased risk of side effects in children who use triamcinolone topical
- Delayed growth in children
- Weight gain, water retention, shortness of breath, mood changes, insomnia or trouble sleeping, headache, dizziness, anxiety or restlessness
- Severe mood changes or depression, bloody or black, tarry stools, muscle weakness, confusion, very high blood pressure, fast heart rate
Triamcinolone acetonide cream contains 1 mg Triamcinolone Acetonide in a cream base consisting of cetyl alcohol, glyceryl monostearate, cetyl esters wax, isopropyl palmitate, polysorbate-60, polysorbate-80, propylene glycol, and purified water. It is applied to the affected area two or three times daily and rubbed in gently. If an infection develops, the use of occlusive dressings should be discontinued, and appropriate antimicrobial therapy instituted.
