Warticon is a topical medication used to treat and eliminate genital warts in adults. It contains the active ingredient podophyllotoxin, which is effective in preventing warts from growing or dividing. Warticon is available as a cream or solution. The cream contains podophyllotoxin in a 0.15% concentration (0.15mg of podophyllotoxin per gram of cream), while the solution contains podophyllotoxin 5 mg/ml (0.5% w/v). The following are the positive and negative aspects of Warticon:
Positive:
- Effective in treating genital warts
- Contains podophyllotoxin, which is a potent antiviral agent
- Only a small amount of treatment is required due to the potency and limited area of treatment
- One box of either type is enough for four weeks of treatment
Negative:
- Warticon Solution is not recommended during pregnancy or in women of childbearing potential not using contraception
- Patients should avoid smoking or being near an open flame during application and immediately after use due to the flammable nature of the solution
- Skin irritation, rash, soreness or ulceration around the areas where you apply the cream are some of the side effects associated with Warticon
- If residual warts persist, the 3-day treatment may be repeated weekly until there is no visible wart tissue or for a total of 4 weeks of treatment
