Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are small fluid-filled blisters that develop on or around the lips. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which is highly contagious and can be easily passed from person to person by close direct contact. The virus can spread through saliva or close contact, often through kissing or by sharing utensils, straws, towels, or lip balm with someone who has a cold sore. Cold sores usually heal on their own within 7 to 10 days without treatment. However, antiviral medications can speed up the healing process, especially if taken at the first sign of an outbreak. Some common triggers for cold sore outbreaks include stress, fever, colds, allergies, fatigue, sunburn, dental work, cosmetic surgery, and menstruation.
