The Speaker is elected at the beginning of a new Congress by a majority of the Representatives-elect from candidates separately chosen by the majority- and minority-party caucuses. The Speaker is the presiding officer of the House and is charged with numerous duties and responsibilities by law and by the House rules. The Speaker is also the political and parliamentary leader of the House and is simultaneously its presiding officer, de facto leader of the bodys majority party, and the institutions administrative head.
