Milia are small white bumps that appear on the skin, usually on the face. They are caused by dead skin cells that dont slough away and instead get trapped under the new skin, harden, and form a milium. Milia can also be caused by skin damage from something like a rash, an injury, or sun exposure, long-term use of steroid medications, genetics, or an autoimmune condition. Babies are most likely to get milia because their skin is still learning how to replace itself, and they sometimes have milia and baby acne. Milia are harmless and dont need treatment, but if youre worried about how they look, you can use an over-the-counter exfoliating cosmetic with salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acid, or a retinoid to help remove the dead skin cells. Its important not to pick at or pop the milia, as this can cause complications such as scarring or infection.
