In the United States, after kindergarten, children begin elementary school with grade 1 and it goes up each year to grade 5. They finish elementary school around age 10. Elementary school is followed by middle school or junior high school, which lasts for three years, from grade 6 to grade 8 or 9, depending on the state. After middle school, students continue at high school, which lasts for four years, from grade 9 or 10 to grade 12. In some states, students have to stay in school until they are 18 years old, while in other states they may leave school at 16 or 17 with parental permission.
