Pete Hegseth served as an infantry officer in the Minnesota Army National Guard. After graduating from Princeton University in 2003 and being commissioned as a second lieutenant through ROTC, he served at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base leading a platoon guarding detainees. He volunteered for deployment in the Iraq War where he served as an infantry platoon leader in the 101st Airborne Division, including tours in Baghdad and Samarra as a civil affairs officer. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service. Hegseth later returned to active duty in 2012, serving as a senior counterinsurgency instructor in Afghanistan. He rose to the rank of major and served in the Individual Ready Reserve and the District of Columbia Army National Guard until 2021.
