Nits, which are the eggs of head lice, look like very small, oval-shaped specks attached to individual hair shafts close to the scalp. They are usually white to yellowish in color and have a shiny or translucent appearance. Nits are about the size of a pinhead and are attached firmly to hair with a glue- like substance secreted by the female louse, making them difficult to remove. They can sometimes be mistaken for dandruff, but unlike dandruff, nits do not easily brush or shake off because they stick firmly to the hair.
