Prairie dogs primarily eat a herbivorous diet consisting mostly of grasses, seeds, and plants. They also consume broadleaf plants called forbs, flowers, and occasionally insects. Their diet changes with the seasons: in spring and summer, grasses and seeds are predominant; in fall, they eat more forbs; and in winter, they focus on seeds and insects for higher fiber. Prairie dogs get most of their hydration from the moisture in the plants they consume, but they can also eat snow or cacti in dry conditions for water. Pet prairie dogs have dietary needs similar to rabbits, eating hay (preferably grass hay like timothy), fresh dark leafy greens, and occasional fruits as treats, while avoiding high-protein alfalfa hay and toxic foods like potatoes and chocolate.
