Zinc is a mineral that is essential for many of the bodys normal functions and systems. It is found in cells throughout the body and helps the cells to grow and divide, and is necessary for the activity of enzymes, proteins, and DNA. Zinc is important for many of the bodys functions, including:

  • Immune system: The body needs zinc to fight off infection. People who dont have enough zinc in their body may be at greater risk of infections. Children and older people are at greater risk.

  • Wound healing: Zinc is important for skin health and effective wound healing. It aids in tissue repair and helps repair the cells that line the intestinal tract, keeping them strong and in good shape so they can properly absorb nutrients.

  • Blood clotting: Zinc is involved in the process of blood clotting.

  • Thyroid function: Zinc is necessary for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland.

  • Senses of taste and smell: Zinc is involved in the senses of taste and smell.

Zinc is also important for growth and development during pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence. Zinc is found in many food sources, including oysters, meat, fish, poultry, seafood such as crab and lobsters, fortified breakfast cereals, beans, nuts, whole grains, eggs, and dairy products. Zinc supplements are also available, but it is important not to take more than 40mg of extra zinc unless advised to do so by a doctor, as too much zinc can cause side effects.
