There was a major mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, connected to a Jewish Hanukkah event.
What happened
Two gunmen opened fire near a large Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach on the evening of 14 December 2025, when more than a thousand people were gathered. The shooting caused chaos along the beachfront as crowds fled the area and nearby streets were locked down by police.
Casualties and victims
Reports from Australian authorities indicate that at least around 15–16 people were killed, including one of the attackers and at least one child. Dozens of others, roughly 30–40 people, were injured, among them police officers and festival attendees of various ages.
Attackers and arrests
Police say one suspected gunman, a man around 50 years old, was shot dead at the scene. A second suspect, reported to be his adult son, was taken into custody in critical condition, and authorities have said they are not seeking further suspects.
Motive and classification
Australian officials have described the attack as a terrorist incident and an act of antisemitism targeting Jews during Hanukkah. The prime minister condemned it as a deliberate attack on Jewish Australians at a religious celebration.
Situation afterward
Bondi Beach and surrounding roads were closed while forensic work and investigations continued. Officials have said there is no ongoing threat to the public, but security around Jewish sites and major public areas has been strengthened nationwide.
