Ask Jeeves was a search engine that was founded in 1996 and featured a well-dressed valet who supposedly fetched search results and was able to understand questions posed in everyday phrasing. The company attempted to invade Yahoo Answers territory by focusing on a real-person Q&A site, but Ask.com ended its foray into search engineering in 2010. In 2005, Ask Jeeves was rebranded as Ask.com, and after close to 10 years, the company put its beloved butler to rest. The site was sold to holding company IAC, came off the stock exchange, got rid of Jeeves, and relaunched its search engine to try and tap into the look and feel of Google or Yahoo. But it was too late. Ask Jeeves failed, and nothing could be done to salvage it. However, in 2009, Jeeves was resurrected to return to his old job as Asks mascot after the American-owned company decided to plump for another rebrand.
