Catherine of Aragon was the first wife of King Henry VIII of England, and they were married on June 11, 1509. Catherine was originally betrothed to Henrys older brother, Arthur, but he died soon after their marriage. Catherine and Henry had six children, but only one daughter, Mary I, survived. As the years went by, Henry became desperate for a male heir and attempted to divorce Catherine for a younger woman. Catherine, a staunch Catholic, refused to accept the divorce and insisted she was the rightful queen. Henrys desire for a divorce led to the separation of the Church of England from the Catholic Church. After being banished from court by Henry, Catherine lived out the remainder of her life at Kimbolton Castle, where she died in January 1536 at the age of 50 or 51.
