Dick Butkus, a legendary Bears Hall of Fame middle linebacker, passed away at the age of 80. He died "peacefully in his sleep overnight at home in Malibu, California". Butkus was born on December 9, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois. He played for the Chicago Bears for all nine of his NFL seasons in the 1960s and 1970s, and made eight Pro Bowls. In his nine-year career with the Bears, Butkus was a five-time first-team All-Pro selection and an eight-time Pro Bowl honoree. He totaled 22 career interceptions and 27 fumble recoveries, one of which was run back for a touchdown. Butkus tenacious style also took a toll on his health. A right knee injury forced him to retire at the age of 31 following the 1973 season. Despite Butkus greatness on the field, the Bears did not qualify for the playoffs once during his career. Following his playing career, Butkus remained in the spotlight mostly as an actor and announcer.
