Robert Redford had four children with his first wife, Lola Van Wagenen: two sons, Scott and James, and two daughters, Shauna and Amy. Tragically, both of his sons died before him. Scott, the oldest son, was born in 1959 but died at only 2 ½ months old from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Redford rarely spoke publicly about Scott's death but acknowledged the deep and lasting impact it had on him. James, the younger son, was born in 1962 and became a filmmaker and activist like his father. He suffered from serious health issues starting in his youth, including liver disease, which led to two liver transplants. Unfortunately, James was later diagnosed with bile duct cancer and died in October 2020 at the age of 58. Robert Redford passed away in September 2025, survived by his two daughters and grandchildren, carrying on his legacy. The deaths of his sons, Scott and James, were profound personal losses for him during his life.
