If an AFL Grand Final ends in a draw at the end of ordinary time, the game proceeds to additional time on the same day rather than having a replay match. The procedure is as follows:
- The goal umpires confirm that the scores are identical.
- There is a six-minute break.
- Teams change ends.
- Two additional time periods of three minutes each (plus time on) are played.
- After the first additional time period, the siren sounds, teams change ends immediately without a break, and the second additional time period commences.
- At the conclusion of these two periods, the team with the highest score is declared the winner.
- If the scores are still tied, the process of playing further pairs of three-minute halves (with ends changing after each) repeats until a winner is determined.
Additionally, during this extra time, each team is granted 10 interchanges total for the two periods, and unused interchanges do not carry over to subsequent periods. Runners may enter the arena after goals or significant stoppages and at the conclusion of each additional time period as players change ends. This rule was introduced starting in 2016 to replace the previous system where a drawn Grand Final would be replayed the following week, which had happened three times in history before then.
