A biologic, also known as a biological medical product, is any pharmaceutical drug product manufactured in, extracted from, or semisynthesized from biological sources. Biologics can be composed of sugars, proteins, nucleic acids, or complex combinations of these substances, or may be living cells or tissues. They are isolated from living sources such as humans, animals, plants, fungi, or microorganisms. Biologics are a subset of a class of medications called disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and are used to treat a wide range of conditions, from autoimmune disorders to cancer. They are more complex and harder to make than conventional DMARDs and cost much more. Biologics can treat a variety of conditions, such as cancer, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohns disease.
