A mild concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that affects brain function and is usually caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, leading to chemical changes in the brain and stretching and damaging brain cells. Symptoms of a mild concussion may affect how a person thinks, learns, feels, acts, and sleeps and may include headaches, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, memory problems, balance and coordination issues, and emotional changes. Most people with a mild concussion feel better within a couple of weeks, but the effects of a mild concussion can be serious, and people with a mild concussion need to be seen by a healthcare provider
