A Mustang horse is a feral horse found in the western United States, descended from horses brought to the Americas by the Spanish. Although often referred to as wild horses, they are actually feral horses because they are descended from once-domesticated animals. The original Mustangs were Colonial Spanish horses, but many other breeds and types of horses contributed to the modern Mustang, resulting in varying phenotypes. Most Mustangs are of the light horse or warmblood type, standing between 14 and 15 hands high and weighing about 800 pounds. They are known for being very hardy and surefooted, thanks to their wild heritage, and are ideal as working horses and trail horses. The herds of Mustangs are managed by the Bureau of Land Management, which hosts regular events to enable people to adopt or buy a Mustang.
