A PT test, or prothrombin time test, is a blood test that measures how quickly your blood forms a clot. The test measures the function of a part of the clotting system, specifically the time it takes for the liquid portion (plasma) of your blood to clot. A related blood test is the partial thromboplastin time (PTT), which measures the function of a different part of the clotting system. The PT test is often done on people who may have bleeding or clotting disorders, liver disease, or vitamin K deficiency. It is also used to monitor individuals who are being treated with the blood-thinning medication warfarin (Coumadin®) . A high PT level means it takes more time than usual for your body to form clots. The test is a basic blood draw and takes just a few minutes.
