A registered domestic partnership is a legal relationship between two people of the same or opposite sex who live together and share a domestic life, but are not married or joined by a civil union nor are blood relatives. In California, for example, in order to have the rights provided by state law to registered domestic partnerships, couples must be registered with Californias statewide registry. Registered domestic partners generally have the same rights, protections, and benefits, and are subject to the same responsibilities, obligations, and duties under law as are granted to and imposed upon spouses. Many of the rights, protections, benefits, responsibilities, obligations, and duties under California law are provided in the California Family Code. However, specific questions relating to insurance, financial or other benefits should be directed to a private attorney to assist with the evaluation of specific circumstances and to ensure accurate information.
