Abecedarian refers to two related ideas:
- A poetic form: an abecedarian poem is arranged so that the initial letter of each line or stanza follows the alphabet in order from A to Z (or through the relevant alphabet). This form often functions as an acrostic, guiding the structure and sometimes the meaning of the piece.
- A general sense of beginners: as a noun, it can describe a person who is learning the basics of a subject (an “alphabet learner” or novice). It can also describe something arranged alphabetically.
