An Achilles injury is an injury that affects the Achilles tendon, which is a strong fibrous cord that connects the muscles in the back of the calf to the heel bone. The injury can occur in several ways, including:

  • Achilles Tendon Rupture: This is a complete or partial tear of the Achilles tendon that occurs when the tendon is stretched beyond its capacity. It mainly occurs in people playing recreational sports, but it can happen to anyone. If the Achilles tendon ruptures, you might hear a pop, followed by an immediate sharp pain in the back of your ankle and lower leg that is likely to affect your ability to walk properly.

  • Achilles Tendinopathy: This is a chronic (long-term) condition that causes weakness and degeneration of the Achilles due to a series of very small tears (tendinosis). It can be caused by excessive loading of the Achilles, such as a sudden increase in physical activity or less recovery time between activity, wearing unsupportive shoes, running on hard or uneven surfaces, tight or weak calf muscles, and inadequate warm-up.

The symptoms of an Achilles injury include pain along the back of the leg near the heel, swelling, stiffness, and difficulty walking or standing on tiptoe. Treatment for an Achilles injury depends on the severity of the injury and can range from nonsurgical treatment, such as rest, medicines to help with inflammation, and exercises, to surgery to repair the tendon.
