MI6, also known as the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), is the foreign intelligence service of the United Kingdom, tasked mainly with the covert overseas collection and analysis of human intelligence in support of the UKs national security. MI6 is one of the British intelligence agencies, and its Chief is directly accountable to the Foreign Secretary. MI6 was formed in 1909 as the foreign section of the Secret Service Bureau, and it officially adopted its current name around 1920. The name "MI6" (meaning Military Intelligence, Section 6) originated as a convenient label during the Second World War, when SIS was known by many names. MI6 agents are at the heart of what MI6 does. Usually foreign nationals, they voluntarily work with MI6 to provide secret intelligence that helps to keep the UK and often the rest of the world safe and secure. MI6 works closely with other security services to protect the UK from a broad range of threats. While MI6 focuses on threats from overseas, MI5 gathers intelligence and carries out investigations to counter threats from within the UK.
