A charge sheet is a formal police record that shows the names of each person brought into custody, the nature of the accusations, and the identity of the accusers. It is also known as a final report of a police officer under Section 173(2) of the Cr.P.C. During an investigation, the police gather evidence such as witness statements, forensic reports, and other documents. Once the investigation is complete, the police file a charge sheet, which is basically a legal document that is filed by the police after completing their investigation and before the commencement of the trial. The charge sheet is an intimation to the magistrate that upon investigation into a cognizable offense, the Investigation Officer has been able to procure sufficient evidence for the court to inquire into the offense and the necessary information is being sent to the court.
