Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) is a complex, multi-system illness caused by a chronic, inappropriate immune response to exposure to biotoxins, such as those from mold, Lyme disease, water-damaged buildings, certain algae, and tick or spider bites. It leads to widespread inflammation that does not resolve, causing a wide range of symptoms including fatigue, cognitive difficulties (brain fog, memory problems), muscle and joint pain, headaches, mood disturbances, digestive issues, and neurological symptoms, among others. A genetic predisposition prevents some people from effectively clearing these biotoxins, resulting in prolonged inflammation and various health problems throughout the body.
CIRS is often diagnosed based on symptom clusters and exposure history, involving a multi-step clinical evaluation. The condition can affect virtually any organ system and may become disabling if untreated.
