Differential GPS (DGPS) is a system that enhances the positional data available from global navigation satellite systems by using satellites and ground-based reference stations to provide improved accuracy for navigation and positioning. It works by using a fixed, known position to adjust real-time GPS signals, thereby eliminating pseudorange errors and improving the accuracy of position data. DGPS can increase accuracy by about a thousandfold, from approximately 15 meters to 1–3 centimeters, making it ideal for applications such as surveying, construction, navigation, mapping, and engineering. The system requires a GPS receiver to be set up on a precisely known location, which serves as the base or reference station. The base station receiver calculates its position based on satellite signals and compares this location to the known location, and the difference is applied to the GPS data recorded by the second GPS receiver, known as the roving receiver. The corrected information can be applied to data from the roving receiver in real time in the field using radio signals or through postprocessing after data capture using special processing software.
