Internal dialogue, also known as inner dialogue or inner monologue, is a voice inside a persons head that they "hear" themselves talk without actually speaking and forming sounds. It is a form of intrapersonal communication, which is communication with oneself. Internal dialogue can take different forms, including:

  • Verbal: This is the most common form of internal dialogue, where a person essentially "talks" to themselves. For example, they may talk to themselves about issues that are on their mind or make internal lists of things theyd like to accomplish.

  • Conversation: Internal dialogue may also come in the form of a conversation with oneself. For instance, a person can attempt to solve a problem by playing out a conversation in their mind.

  • Songs or memories: Internal voices can also come in the form of having songs stuck in ones head or replaying a favorite movie or podcast in their mind.

Internal dialogue can help support working memory, prepare better for a speech or a presentation, and replay instructions in ones mind. It is a common occurrence, but not everyone experiences it.
