Intrapartum refers to the period of pregnancy from the onset of labor to delivery of the newborn and the placenta. It is the portion of pregnancy that occurs during labor and ends following the third stage of labor. During this period, the uterus contracts to provide the main force necessary for delivery, and the assessment of the fetus during labor is always interpreted relative to uterine activity. Intrapartum can refer to both the woman and the fetus. The intrapartum portion of pregnancy can be daunting for most women as it requires a great deal of physical effort, discomfort, and pain. Medical professionals must monitor intrapartum pregnancy for signs of concern.
