Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is equipment worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses. PPE is used to create a protective barrier between a worker and hazards in the workplace. It includes protective clothing for the eyes, head, ears, hands, respiratory system, body, and feet. Examples of PPE include hard hats, face shields, goggles, gloves, vests, respirators, safety shoes, and coveralls. PPE must be of safe design and construction, and be maintained in a clean and reliable fashion. PPE is required for many transportation maintenance activities. Both employers and employees have responsibilities for maintaining a safe work environment. Employers must ensure that employees have PPE equipment in accordance with federal OSHA and state standards. Employees should use PPE properly and report any problems with it to their supervisor.
