Rhinovirus is a virus that causes the common cold. It is spread through respiratory droplets that are released when an infected person coughs or sneezes, and can also be spread through close personal contact with an infected person, such as shaking hands or hugging. Rhinoviruses can also be spread by touching a surface contaminated with the virus and then touching ones eyes, nose, or mouth. Rhinoviruses usually occur year-round but tend to rise in early fall and spring. Most rhinovirus infections are mild, and no medication is needed. Antibiotics do not work for the common cold and other infections caused by viruses. Symptoms of rhinovirus infection include a runny nose, sore throat, coughing, sneezing, watery eyes, headaches, and body aches. Infants and children may develop fever, and otitis media. Infants may develop more severe disease such as croup, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. Rhinoviruses may trigger asthma attacks.
