Sabbath mode is a feature found in many modern appliances, including refrigerators, ovens, and dishwashers, that allows the appliance to be used for certain religious observances during specific times, such as the Sabbath or Jewish holidays. The mode usually overrides the usual, everyday operation of the electrical appliance and makes the operation of the appliance comply with the rules of Halakha (Jewish law) .
In the case of a refrigerator, Sabbath mode allows the appliance to keep food and ingredients cool while limiting interaction with the electrical system. When the refrigerator is in Sabbath mode, the interior lights, sounds, and other controls are disabled, and the water filter status lights are turned off. The temperature cannot be adjusted, and the ice and water dispenser will be disabled. The refrigerator will continue to run on a timed defrost in order to keep food fresh. If the unit experiences a power outage while in Sabbath mode, the refrigerator will resume in Sabbath mode once power returns.
To activate Sabbath mode on a Whirlpool refrigerator, you need to hold the mode button for three seconds. To exit Sabbath mode, you need to hold the mode button for three seconds again. The functionality of Sabbath mode on a refrigerator is far less complex than it is on an oven.
