SCATS stands for Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System. It is an intelligent real-time traffic management system that dynamically adjusts the timing of traffic signal phases based on real-time traffic conditions. SCATS uses data from vehicle sensors and pedestrian push buttons at intersections to optimize the flow of traffic, reduce delays, minimize stops, decrease fuel consumption and emissions, and improve overall road safety. The system operates across entire networks, corridors, or single intersections and is widely implemented, with over 60,000 intersections in more than 200 cities worldwide. It was developed by the New South Wales government in Australia and has been in use since the 1970s.
