The Blue Whale Challenge is a social media phenomenon that began in 2016 and is claimed to exist in several countries. It is a game that encourages children, teenagers, and other users to perform specific tasks over the course of 50 days. The challenge was initially reported to be an online "suicide game" aimed at teenagers which set 50 tasks over 50 days, and was alleged to be linked to numerous deaths around the world. However, closer investigation has revealed that little about the Blue Whale challenge was quite as it was initially reported, and the game doesnt seem to have existed at all. The game consists of different tasks/challenges which have to be completed within 50 days and is monitored by an administrator. The challenge as a whole is meant to harm students and slowly gets them to trust the game. Players of the challenge can’t stop playing once they’ve started; they are blackmailed and cyber-bullied into completing the “game” . The Blue Whale Challenge creates an area where vulnerable, isolated, or depressed children and teenagers may visit and can be exploited and controlled. Furthermore, it creates new opportunities for predators to target victims on social media.
