The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is a civil rights organization in the United States that was formed in 1909 as an interracial endeavor to advance justice for African Americans by a group including W. E. B. Du Bois, Mary White Ovington, Moorfield Storey, and Ida B. Wells. The organizations purpose is "to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination". The NAACP is headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, and has a membership of 300,000. The organization advocates, agitates, and litigates for the civil rights due to Black America. The NAACP works to remove all barriers of racial discrimination through democratic processes and has provided legal representation and aid to members of other protest groups over a sustained period of time. The organization has also established the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, which litigated to the Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, the case that resulted in the high court’s landmark 1954 school-desegregation decision. The NAACP is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization, and its 501(c)(3) partner organization, known as NAACP Empowerment Programs, accepts fully tax-deductible donations, as allowed by the IRS.
