In chess tournaments, a tiebreak is used to determine a winner when two or more players have the same score. Tiebreaks are calculated based on the score of players they have defeated and drawn against. The following list of tie-breaking methods is used, from top to bottom, moving down the list only if there is still a tie after using the previous method:

  • Buchholz Cut 1
  • Buchholz
  • Sonneborn-Berger
  • Cumulative
  • Direct encounter
  • Koya
  • Drawing of lots

The Sonneborn-Berger method is often used and gives the win to the player who has defeated the players with the most tournament points. Tiebreak scores are calculated by adding the sum of the players points they have defeated to half the sum of the player's points they have drawn against.
