World Teachers Day is an international day held annually on October 5th to celebrate the work of teachers. It was established in 1994 to commemorate the signing of a recommendation by the International Labour Organization and aims to focus on "appreciating, assessing, and improving the educators of the world". The day honors teachers in light of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 4 on education, which defines access to education and quality teachers as crucial to fulfilling the UN’s Education 2030 agenda. UNESCO and Education International mount a campaign each year to help give the world a better understanding of teachers and the role they play in the development of students and society. The campaign focuses on different themes every year, and the 2023 World Teachers’ Day theme is "The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage". More than 100 countries commemorate World Teachers Day, and each holds its own celebrations.
